Top Ten Tuesday – Things That Make Me Pick Up A Book

TTT-NEW

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It’s all about love of lists, love of literature and bringing bookish people together.

Hey everyone! So…. It has been a while since I have done a Top Ten Tuesday. But, it’s back! March was a bit crazy for me, combine that with not really feeling some of last months topics, well I just didn’t get around to doing many!

This week’s topic is things that me pick up a book. Now there are lots of reasons why people pick up books, and they can be quite personal to each person, so I figured this would be a really good one to get involved with! I look forward to reading what makes others want to pick up a book as well! Anyway, here are ten things that make me want to pick up a book:

The Cover

You know that famous old saying? Don’t judge a book by its cover? Yeah? Well I sometimes ignore that! Quite often actually. I’m a total sucker for a pretty cover. A good cover really grabs your attention in a book shop and teases just a little bit about the story. Here are some examples of some of my favourite recent book covers:

Recommendations & Reviews

What do other people, whose opinions that I trust on books, think about this book? That is always something that attracts me to a book. If a whole bunch of book bloggers or book tubers that I trust like the book, I’m going to give it a try. I can’t tell you the number of books I have picked up since beginning my book blog because of repeatedly seeing a book getting positive reviews. Wooo! We make a difference!

Author

An author’s reputation can get me to pick u a book… or a whole series! It’s basically what made me start reading Brandon Sanderson this year. Aside from that, if I have previously liked an author’s book then I am more likely to pick up a book by that author.

Previous books in a series…

This one kind of ties in with the previous one, but if I have read and enjoyed a book in a series, then I am obviously more likely to want to pick up the next one! Who likes to leave a story half done!?!?

Hype

I am growing more wary of hype, wily old veteran that I am. (Not!) But if an upcoming book is hyped, I do think it makes a difference in making me want to pick it up. After all, there has to be a reason why it is hyped! I do try to not get too caught up though, not all books deserve their hype…

Goodreads Ratings

If a book doesn’t have much hype or many reviews/recommendations, then I’ll often check out its Goodreads page and see what people are saying about it. If it has a lowish rating (say below 3 stars) then I do tend to be a little wary – I mean some books I really haven’t liked have had good ratings, so what must be wrong with the low rating ones!

The Synopsis

As simple as whether or not the book sounds interesting or not. I give it a read, and I’m either like ‘Oooooh that sounds good!’ or ‘Nope. Nope, nope nope.’ Occasionally, I go ‘Meh, it sounds ok,’ but I actually prefer them to evoke some emotion either way.

Setting/Time Period

I’m a sucker for historical fiction set in the medieval times, dark ages or ancient times. I also love a good fantasy world – stick a well-drawn map in and I’m hooked. Honestly.

My Mood

Yes, this one is inconsistent and fickle, but hey, what are you gonna do? Sometimes you feel like a certain type of book and so that can have a big effect on my picking it up or not.

If my library has it

This isn’t one that authors may want to hear, but if I am umming and ahhhing about whether to read a book or not, it being free to pick up in my library is often the tipping point of whether I do read it or not! Sorry, not sorry.

not even sorry

  1. I think library availability, mood and setting are all ones that would have made my list this week, too, if I would have thought of them. 😛 But I am definitely such a mood reader and setting is huge for me. Quality list!
