I received a review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This has not affected the contents of my review and all opinions are my own.

At the age of twelve, Roxanne Fosch had a perfectly normal life.
By the time she was twenty-two, she was being hunted.
After being trapped for years within the clutches of the Paranormal Scientists Society, Roxanne escapes and embarks on the dangerous quest for the truth about her past. Soon, she discovers that she’s not human – and a rarity even among her Fae peers.
Hunted by PSS scientists keen to exploit her extraordinary abilities, and dangerous factions whose plans she cannot fathom, Roxanne realizes that everything she’s ever known is a lie.

Heir of Ashes is a self-published book by Jina S. Bazzar, and that blurb sounds pretty cool right? To me it felt like a weird mash-up of X-Men, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert. So, I started this book thinking it would be right up my street. Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite true. That doesn’t mean it won’t be for you though, maybe you’ll read my review and be like, ‘Oh that sounds awesome.’ Fingers crossed as I always want people to enjoy books!

Anyway, while this book wasn’t for me, I can see why people would like it and so here are my positives:

  • The mystery: This book is full of mystery. Especially the beginning. Who are the Paranormal Scientists Society? Who is this Logan chap? So many questions that you want answered.
  • The pacing: The story moves at an electric pace and really is action-packed right from the off. Roxanne moves from one danger to the other with barely a breath; giving you a real sense of the danger she is in.
  • The monster/genre mash up: This book straddles a strange line between sci-fi and fantasy. That’s what I meant when I said it is a mash up of Buffy and X-Men. We have vampires and other monsters, but we also have a science behind things. I quite liked it.

Okay, so that was what I liked; what about what I don’t like so much?

  • The pacing: Wait, this was a positive! Yeah. The pacing was a double edged-sword for me. Yes, it was action packed and fast, but I never felt like we had anytime to get to know or care for Roxanne. I knew she was in constant danger… I just didn’t care. Sorry.
  • The characters: This one really carries on from the last one. I just didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. That really kills a book for me, I am afraid.
  • Repetitive phrases: I know there are only so many ways you describe something, but the same of the writing felt a little repetitive with the same phrases, similes and adjectives being repeatedly used over and over again.

Overall, as I said earlier, I am afraid to say this book really wasn’t for me. If that blurb catches your attention, maybe you’ll like it. So, don’t let me put you off and go make your own mind up.

Oh ye, I think it’s a balancing act! Get that right though, and even if the rest isn’t great… if the characters aren’t compelling or the setting isn’t well developed… it carries it
