Top Ten Tuesday – Inspirational/Thought-Provoking Book Quotes

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It’s all about love of lists, love of literature and bringing bookish people together.

Hey everyone! Another Tuesday and another Top Ten Tuesday post!

This week’s topic is a great one! It’s inspirational or thought-provoking book quotes.  There are just soooo many amazing lines in books that it is almost impossible to pick just ten, but I did it. I’ll fully admit, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter get the lion’s share here, but they are the obvious places to look.

Anyway, without further ado, here are a top ten of amazing book quotes that really make you think!

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” -Frodo and Gandalf, Lord of the Rings (The Fellowship of the Ring)

“How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.” – Samwise Gamgee, Lord of the Rings (The Two Towers)

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” – Thorin Oakenshield, The Hobbit

“We are all someone’s monster.” ― Matthias, Six of Crows

“Once upon a time, all of us, no matter what we’ve grown up to do or who we’ve grown up to be, were little boys and girls, happy with nothing more than bouncing a ball against a wall.” – Papa Jack, The Toy Makers

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” ― Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

“But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” ― Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” ― Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” ― Sirius Black, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

“You see, there’s a fundamental connection between seeming and being. Every Fae child knows this, but you mortals never seem to see. We understand how dangerous a mask can be. We all become what we pretend to be.” – Bast, The Name of the Wind

You probably noticed a bit of theme with my quotes? Yes, they’re all (for the most part) about choosing to do the right thing or staying positive in even the most dark struggles. J.K. Rowling especially has some great ones about choosing to do the right thing, but I think my favourites are Tolkien’s ones about staying positive in the face of evil. I think he has such good lines in this regard because of his experiences in WWI.

Anyway, sorry to get a bit deep there! What did you guys think of my list? Any great lines you think I missed? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
