Genres I Want To

Copy of Book Review (38)

I don’t know about you guys, but I suspect this is going to be true for many of us, but I have a favourite genre that the vast majority of books that I read are from. For me, this is fantasy. I love fantasy and the world-building and so much about it, BUT if I am only reading fantasy then I am missing out on so many great books that are in other genres.

So, I figured this is the year to make a conscious effort to read a wider range of genres, and there are 3 that I really want to get stuck into. I’ve also given three books from these genres that are top of my list to pick up!

Sci-Fi is a really quick jump over from fantasy as it has a lot of parallels in terms of possibility for world-building and properly escaping from the real world. And as such, it is pretty strange that I haven’t picked up more of it!

My choices are:

  • All Systems Red by Martha Wells
  • Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
  • The Solar War by John French

Travel Writing

This is a genre that I already read a little bit of. If you go through my blog, you’ll see a couple of reviews for travel books but I want to get more out there! I have always been obsessed with maps and exploring the world and, unfortunately, financial restrictions mean that I can’t always go adventuring in person, so books are the next best way to do this obviously!

History Books

This a genre I occasionally dip my toes in, but I want to get more in. I find history absolutely fascinating and have done since I was a child. My favourite subject in school, don’t you know! Plus, I think it is vital to understanding so much of the modern world, so important too.

My choices are:

  • The Templars: The Rise and Spectacular Fall of God’s Holy Warriors by Dan Jones
  • Istanbul: A Tale of Three Cities by Bettany Hughes
  • SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard by John French

Anyway, these are three genres that I really want to read more of.

Do you want to read any more of these genres? Do ou have any recomendations? Or do you have any other genres that you want to read more of?

Let me know in the comments!

  1. I read a lot of SF, and enjoy it greatly. I also read a good few history books a year, and your choices look great! I’m especially interested in the book on Templars, and ancient Rome too! 😊

    1. The Templars one is the next book I’m gonna read. If you are interested in ancient Rome, I’d suggest the 24 Hours in Ancient Rome book..was a really interesting angle to ancient history through. There is also an ancient Egypt and Athens one in that series.

  2. I LOVE “MURDERBOT” and I’m looking forward to reading the novel! I haven’t read “Children of Time,” yet; but, I hope to start soon.

As for history books, I can give you two titles, if you’re interested.

    1. I always hear great things about MURDERBOT, so I really need to get around to reading it! Hope you enjoy Children of Time too, seems very popular.

And I’m always happy to take recommendations!

  3. My love for Murderbot knows no bounds. I would recommend the audio books if you like audio. Children of Time has been sitting on my Kindle for ages. I want to but the subject matter is kind of terrifying for me so good luck with that one to us both!
